Welcome to the second Meridian staff newsletter.

Tara Essenhigh is in charge of sales for Cabrière wines in the Western Cape. "I love my job and couldn't ask for a better brand to sell. Everyone knows the Haute Cabrière Chardonnay/ Pinot Noir, and they regard the Pierre Jourdan Mèthode Cap Classiques as a treat, so it's not so hard getting my customers to stock our products."

Having studied Catering Management in Durban and worked as a chef in several illustrious hotels and eateries around South Africa and abroad, Tara is ideally qualified for this job: "I understand Achim's philosophy of the marriage of food and wine, and so I am passionate about training waiters and sommeliers about the Cabrière wines and how they complement various dishes.

It is often said that people resemble their pets in both looks and character. Takuan von Arnim owns a Rhodesian Ridgeback. This breed is described as:

'large and well-muscled'
'territorial and protective'
'exuberant and prone to jumping'
'destructive when bored'
'strong-willed'
'calm and quiet at home'

'Mmmm, pretty apt, but I'd add 'bashful' and 'a wry sense of humour' and cap it with that lovely Italian word: 'simpatico', the last being an essential requirement when filling the large but quirky shoes of industry icon Achim von Arnim.

These days, Takuan's favourite tipple is the Pierre Jourdan Belle Rose. Made only from Pinot Noir, its beautiful salmon colour follows through with a lively, fine mousse and an elegant dry finish. "We enjoy it with seafood, or even duck," says Takuan. "The richness of the Pinot Noir grapes lends itself ideally to complement a variety of dishes."

Every wine lover seems to have their own little anecdote about Achim von Arnim. It seems everyone has at some time witnessed Achim sabrage-ing a bottle of Pierre Jourdan with the accompanying kiss and froth – both literal and figurative.

If you need a top up of Achim's unique humour and quirky banter, visit www.sunsoilvineman.co.za and have a laugh at some of his outrageous comments and more serious opinions on wine in general and the industry in particular. Achim's son Takuan, now gradually taking over the reins at the cellar, also chips in occasionally with the odd snippet on UTube as well.
